McCain Says Obama Undermined U.S. Immigration Measure

McCain Says Obama Undermined U.S. Immigration Measure. An illegal immigration information article.
Republican presidential candidate John McCain defended his commitment to an overhaul of U.S. immigration laws and accused Democrat Barack Obama of voting to undermine the legislation in the Senate.

``He voted for, and even sponsored, amendments that were intended to kill the legislation,'' McCain said in a speech today to the annual conference of the National Council of La Raza, an Hispanic advocacy group.

Obama's campaign said the Illinois senator supported the immigration law changes and denied his proposal was intended to block the overhaul.

The measure, the biggest rewrite of U.S. immigration law since 1986, would have offered an estimated 12 million illegal immigrants a path to citizenship while tightening the border with Mexico and creating a guest-worker program. Cosponsored by McCain and Democratic Senator Edward Kennedy, the legislation stalled in June 2007 on a procedural vote as Republicans and some Democrats lined up against it. - See McCain Says Obama Undermined U.S. Immigration Measure for the full report.

Illegal Immigration and the Myth of Jobs No One Wants

Illegal Immigration and the Myth of Jobs No One Wants. An illegal immigration information article.
Do people really debate illegal immigration? Isn't that roughly akin in logic to debating whether the sky is blue?

I could go on with some massive tome about why illegal immigration is bad, what steps should be taken to effectively curtail it, but honestly, I don't feel like it right now. That said, I just heard another TV "talking head (aren't most of those people completely insufferable?)" defend illegal immigration on the basis of one particularly obnoxious point, and the moment wormed its way under my skin just enough to prompt this piece.

How many times have you heard proponents of benevolence toward illegal immigrants defend their position, in whole or in part, on the basis that Americans should be grateful they're here, because they do the jobs no one wants?

When they say "no one," that is code for white Americans, although you never hear anyone come out and say that. In other words, whites, more than browns or blacks, supposedly believe that unskilled manual labor is so far beneath them that they (I guess "we," as I'm one) should be thrilled that illegals have chosen to invade our country because, of course, "we" don't want these jobs. What a pile of garbage.

I don't believe that any job, no matter how unskilled, is beneath me. Personally, I have always tried to find work at things I truly enjoy doing and which present an outlet for intellectual expression, but that does not mean those things I don't necessarily enjoy and which don't provide such an outlet are beneath me - it just means I would prefer doing something else. - See Illegal Immigration and the Myth of Jobs No One Wants for the complete article.

U.S. government waives obstacles to border fence

U.S. government waives obstacles to border fence. An illegal immigration information article.
The U.S government waived environmental and other regulations that it said on Tuesday threatened to delay completion of nearly 500 miles of a planned barrier fence along the border with Mexico.

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, who has chafed at obstacles to the controversial barrier project, issued the waivers for stretches of land in California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. The fence is intended to deter illegal crossings by immigrants, drug runners and others.

"Criminal activity at the border does not stop for endless debate or protracted litigation," Chertoff said in a statement. "Congress and the American public have been adamant that they want and expect border security. We're serious about delivering it."

Illegal immigration is a major issue in this year's presidential and congressional election campaigns. Opponents of the fence include landowners reluctant to surrender their property and environmentalists concerned the barrier would threaten fragile habitats and rare animal species such as the ocelot.

Chertoff has three times previously issued waivers to bypass environmental restrictions to the fence project, using authority granted by Congress in mandating the fence. - See U.S. government waives obstacles to border fence for the full report.

Court Backs Law on Immigrants

Court Backs Law on Immigrants. An illegal immigration article.
A federal judge has thrown out a lawsuit that challenged a new Arizona law barring businesses from knowingly hiring illegal immigrants, setting the stage for the law to take effect in January.

In a ruling released Friday night, the judge, Neil V. Wake of Federal District Court, said the business and immigrant rights groups that filed the challenge sued the wrong government officials in trying to block enforcement of the law.

The ruling said the law gave only investigatory authority to the governor and state attorney general, who were sued in the challenge. - See Court Backs Law on Immigrants for the complete article.

Spitzer makes the case for licenses for illegal immigrants

Spitzer makes the case for licenses for illegal immigrants. An illegal immigration article.
Hillary Clinton is taking flak for the roundabout way in which she answered a question about whether New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer was right to give driver's licenses to illegal immigrants.

During a presidential debate, candidate Clinton insisted that Spitzer was trying to fill the "vacuum" left by Washington's failure to pass comprehensive immigration reform. Then Clinton insisted she never said that she supported the Spitzer plan, only that she understood the reasons for it. Then, she defended the plan. Finally, Clinton accused debate moderator Tim Russert of NBC News of playing "gotcha" by posing such a tough question.

In light of her flip-flops, some critics compared Clinton to - ouch - John Kerry. That's funny. On the driver's license issue, I'm sort of a John Kerry in reverse. I was against the idea before I was for it. - See Spitzer makes the case for licenses for illegal immigrants for the complete article.

Illegal Immigrants or Undocumented Workers

Illegal Immigrants or Undocumented Workers. An illegal immigration article.
Originally written May 12, 2006

This post is not about whether or not illegal immigration is proper or about what should be done about illegal immigrants. This post is about the terms 'illegal immigrant' and 'undocumented worker'.

Recently, various activists, certain members of the Hollywood Elite, various politicians and others like Mexico's President Fox, have been saying that the term 'illegal immigrant' is improper and that to be politically correct, one must use the term 'undocumented worker'. They claim that, the term 'illegal immigrant' is racist and derogatory. They claim that, to be in this country without proper documentation is not a felony, there for it is not illegal.

The foregoing, to me, is illogical. After all, speeding is not a felony but it is illegal. Driving without a valid drivers license is not a felony but it is illegal. In California, smoking a cigarette in a restaurant is not a felony but it is illegal. There are numerous other things that are not felonies but are illegal. I know of nothing in our constitution or laws that says that entering or staying in this country is legal, therefore it is illegal. If a person is here without proper documentation, he or she can be, if necessary, forcibly detained and deported. To me this means that anyone who is living in this country, without proper documentation, is living here illegally. This means that they are all illegal immigrants. - See Illegal Immigrants or Undocumented Workers for the complete article.
