Well, we have recently watched Venezuela and Russia participate in War Games, as a Russian Battleship and several other Russian Vessels showed off their military prowess - perhaps, in an attempt to show the US that Venezuela had strong allies and a force that must be reckoned with. This, not long after the Russians declared they would move short range missiles near their border to render a missile defense shield inadequate and now we have the Russian Navy on their way to Cuba.

So, I ask did someone just hit rewind on history - haven't we already been there and done that? Russia also said that they believe they can negotiate with the Obama Administration. Is this a show of force to serve their negotiators? After all, let's not forget that Russia is also selling weapons to Iran and Iran's President has stated that if anyone comes near, that nation will be sorry. - See Did Someone Hit Rewind on History Or is it Just Me for the complete article.

Russia Escalates NATO Missile Defense Shield Controversy With Non-Ballistic Mobile Launchers

Well, they said it would happen, that the Obama Administration would be challenged almost immediately if he was elected, still the American People somehow either did not buy into that line of thinking or considered it political posturing from the Republicans. This is rather silly considering that it was Joe Biden the Vice President Elect who made the first major media warning on the issue.

Not more than 24-hours after Obama was elected Russia announced that it was sending in the latest generation of stealthy short ranged missiles up against its borders to make the "missile defense" shield for NATO worthless. And mind you Russia is sending in 5 missile brigades, so this is no little matter, all equipped with the Iskander-M Series Short Range mini-capable stealth missiles. They also have long-range ICBMs that might be nearly impossible to shoot down if a swarm strategy is used.

Interestingly enough, it was Joe Biden who told the world prior to the election that; "Israel will have to get use to a nuclear weaponized Iran." And Iran now has enough nuclear material to make a nuclear weapon and has Chinese and Russian missile technology that would allow for missile delivery of up to 1250 miles, perhaps more. And Iran has invested heavily on a new base at the inlet to the Persian Gulf.

Medvedev Far Ahead in Russian Election, Thanks Voters

Medvedev Far Ahead in Russian Election, Thanks Voters. An international issues article.
Dmitry Medvedev took an overwhelming lead in Russia's presidential election, preliminary results show, giving him a widely expected mandate to succeed Vladimir Putin. Russian monitors have complained of electoral violations.

Medvedev, a fan of rock music, made a surprise appearance with Putin at a concert outside Moscow's Kremlin following the closing of polls, thanking hundreds of cheering concertgoers for their support and pledging to continue Putin's policies.

``Together we will go further, together we will triumph, hurrah,'' Medvedev, wearing jeans and a black leather jacket, told the screaming crowd in remarks broadcast live on state television. Medvedev had 67.6 percent of the vote with 45 percent of returns counted at 11:30 p.m. in Moscow, according to the Central Election Commission.

Medvedev, 42, became the clear favorite to win after Putin named him as his chosen successor on Dec. 10. Putin then enjoyed approval ratings of over 80 percent. A week later, Putin agreed to serve as Medvedev's prime minister, keeping a pledge to retain influence and setting the stage for a dual leadership that's unprecedented in modern Russian history.

``We're starting the Medvedev-Putin dual presidency effective today,'' said Chris Weafer, chief strategist at Moscow-based UralSib Financial Corp. ``Today was the wedding, now we hope we get a long honeymoon and some beautiful reforms.'' - See Medvedev Far Ahead in Russian Election, Thanks Voters for the complete article.

Medvedev Pledges Reform in Russia

Medvedev Pledges Reform in Russia. An international issues article.
The presumptive successor to President Vladimir V. Putin presented his platform for seeking Russia’s highest office on Friday, giving a speech before business leaders in Siberia in which he vowed to continue Russia’s economic revival but also struck markedly liberal notes.

The speech by the candidate, First Deputy Prime Minister Dmitri A. Medvedev, was a contrast to the public appearance only a day before of his sponsor, Mr. Putin, who was confrontational and sometimes caustic in what the Kremlin had billed as his final news conference as president.

In the news conference on Thursday, Mr. Putin had sharply criticized the West and the United States, threatened to aim strategic missiles at Europe and said that Russia would develop its own, state-centered brand of democracy without instruction from outside.

Mr. Medvedev, speaking in Krasnoyarsk, a city near Russia’s geographic center, spoke in softer tones, addressing Russia’s middle class and small business owners and embracing Western themes. - See Medvedev Pledges Reform in Russia for the full report.

NATO, Russia Clash Over Arms Accord, Missile Defense, Kosovo. An international issues article.
NATO and Russia clashed over a Cold War-era arms-reduction accord, planned U.S. missile defenses and independence for Kosovo, compounding the chill in East-West relations.

North Atlantic Treaty Organization foreign ministers denounced Russian President Vladimir Putin for suspending a treaty that limits conventional forces in Europe and for frustrating Western moves to win statehood for the Serb province of Kosovo.

``We all expressed concern about the Russian position,'' U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice told reporters after a NATO-Russia meeting in Brussels today. She called the arms- control pact ``one of the essential pieces of the architecture of post-Cold War Europe.'' - See NATO, Russia Clash Over Arms Accord, Missile Defense, Kosovo for the complete article.

Big Putin vote in Chechnya has locals puzzled. An international issues article.
Russia's volatile Chechnya, once President Vladimir Putin's biggest headache, ironically turned out to be a big success story for him in Sunday's election, according to official figures.

But the Central Election Commission's figures, showing that Chechens voted in droves for the Kremlin chief's party United Russia, had some locals scratching their heads.

The figures indicated that 99.2 percent of voters in the war-ravaged region of southern Russia had taken part in the poll and 99.3 percent of them had voted for United Russia. - See Big Putin vote in Chechnya has locals puzzled for the complete article.
